In the global meeting tourism ranking of the International Association of Congresses and Conventions (ICCA), Costa Rica rose to the 53rd position among 200 countries.
Mauricio Ventura, Minister of Tourism in Costa Rica, said that in the last two years the country had made efforts to develop an active strategy to compete in this market area, which represents 22% of world tourism and has a record of 120,000 congresses, generating about $ 11.5 billion annually.
The ICCA was founded in 1963 and conducts this study once a year. Ventura said he expects the country to rise further in a short time as the ongoing strategy continues to improve provisions to attract tourism.
By January 2017 the Costa Rican government began construction of a Convention Center and National Congress, which is expected to conclude later this year, thus being an essential element of the government’s proposed strategy to increase competition in the market for the M&E Meeting tourism.
The Tourism Board of Costa Rica And Premio DMC participated in FIEXPO this week, the international travel fair for incentives and meetings for Latin America and the Caribbean, which took place in Chile. Minister Ventura, here in Costa Rica, received high recognition; The Latin American Forum Prize, for participation in the promotion of meeting tourism.
“The selection of Minister Ventura was based on the dedication and focus he has given the meetings tourism market and the impact this will have in the entire Latin American context, he is also part of a radical change, supporting the industry and the development of the Convention’s Bureau in his country, and of course for his role as one of the promoters of the construction of the National Congress and Convention Center”, explained Sergio Baritussio, Director of FIEXPO Latin America.
Part of the strategy of the Costa Rica Tourism Board includes participation in different fairs, the creation of strategic alliances with prominent national and international organizations and the development of a plan to promote the country in this niche.
